The Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi has solicited support from the US government over human and capital development with the aim of making the state one of the most developed states in the country.
The governor, while receiving the United States of America Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stuart Symington in his office on Monday on a courtesy visit, observed that his administration was committed to improving the socio-economic lives of the state citizenry in the area of infrastructure, health, education and, security and agriculture.
He pointed out that upon his assumption of office in 2011, the state was renowned as one of the violent prone states in the country, adding that his administration based on its pyramid of development, confronted the security lapses in the state with renewed vigour, which culminated to the recent peace being enjoyed in the state.
Ajimobi further used the medium to highlight the effort of his government in other sectors, particularly education through the recent establishment of a Technical University, billed to take off this year in the state, stressing that the university would be a world class institution that would provide manpower/skill needed to speed up technological development in the state and Nigeria as a whole.
On health, the governor noted that his administration has made an enviable achievement through the recent introduction of free health insurance scheme which would afford residents of the state the opportunity to access basic medical care with a token of six hundred naira monthly.
In addition, Ajimobi hinted that the state security apparatus code named “Operation Burst” set up by his administration to complement the effort of the police in checking crime rate had also achieved a remarkable success, stating that inter-religious bodies were also set up to work in tadem with the security outfit in ensuring peace and tranquility in the state.
He also noted that major roads linking the city have been dualised while others have been rehabilitated and provided with basic road furniture, adding that efforts are also on to provide Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at all strategic locations to forestall any criminal activities within the state.
Earlier in his address, the US Ambassador, Mr. Stuart Symington stated that his visit was to learn about the state and the challenges confronting it and to exploit areas where the US government could partner with the state to improve its socio-economic development.
