Osun Government Condemns Gruesome Murder Of Student As Uniosun Students Go On Rampage

Osun state government has condemned the gruesome murder of the 400 level Microbiology student of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Shonibare Timileyin Oluwafemi who was killed by ritualists in Osogbo describing the killing as “unfortunate by some heartless people in the society”.

A statement released by the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Strategy  Mr Adelani Baderinwa and made available to journalists in Osogbo on Wednesday said the state government commiserated with the family and students of the university community.

Baderinwa stated that it was most callous and disheartening that fellow humans could plan and execute the elimination of another for self aggrandizement.

According to him, “the government of the State of Osun mourns the unfortunate killing of Timilehin Sonibare  a part 4 student of the Osun  State University,  UNIOSUN, by some heartless people in the society.

“The government commiserates with students populace in particular and the entire UNIOSUN community. Government also commiserates with the parents and family members of the deceased young man. We condemn in strong terms the wicked and conscience less manner in which the death of Timilehin was perpetrated”, he said.

He noted that values in the society are degenerating as people wanted to become rich by all mean but without working.

The commissioner added that the state government felt the pain of Timileyin’s death the more in view of the fact that it came when UNIOSUN is celebrating its winning the world by the spectacular performance of one of its own in far way Ukraine.

He explained that the arrest of the culprits behind the crime by security operatives was a result of the state government’s collaboration with security operatives to see that the offenders are adequately punished.

He, however, appealed to the aggrieved students and the people of the state to be calm and peaceful while they rightfully mourn the deceased.

“Government makes passionate appeal to the students populace to keep calm,  peaceful while they rightfully  mourn their colleague and allow the killers to be dealt with.  May the soul of the deceased rest in peace”.

Meanwhile, the students of Osun State University (Uniosun), on Wednesday took Osogbo, the state capital hostage for several hours in a violent protest against the perpetual killings of their colleagues.

Shonibare Timileyin Oluwafemi, a 400 level microbiology student of the university was brutally murdered by some ritualists in Osogbo recently.

The protesting students who were  in black attire stormed various streets in Osogbo as early as 9 a.m and hindered vehicular movements.

Many business owners who had opened their shops were forced to close down as the aggrieved students chased people with objects like sticks, stones, iron rod among others.

Also some banks were forced to stop attending to customers and filling stations in the area closed down as a result of the violent protest.

The aggrieved students burnt used tyres at various junctions in Osogbo like Ola-iya junction, Fakunle, Jaleoyemi, Idi-Seke among others.

The protest started at the Osogbo main campus of the institution, before the protesters moved to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, and later to the popular  Olaiya roundabout and later went to state secretariat, Abere where they damaged the entrance to the Secretariat.

Travelers entering the state through Gbongan-Osogbo road and many people moving towards Abere State Secretariat were held in traffic for several hours, while the students attacked some passersby with sticks.

The students also attacked Osun Correspondents’ chapel, beating a female intern attached to the office.

The intervention of the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, and his men later restored normalcy, as the protesters were persuaded to leave the streets.

Speaking with newsmen, Adeoye assured that the suspects arrested would be brought to justice.
