The Lagos/Ibadan Expressway is undoubtedly the most important federal highway in Nigeria. In addition to being the major link to Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, it is also the most popular because of the volume of traffic it records every day.

During a particular weekend in the month of March, 2018, over 30 lives were recorded to have been lost after auto-mishaps at different sections of the road that passes through Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States.

The road which was constructed in the 70s was approved for comprehensive reconstruction by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration sometime in 2001 but he could not deliver on his promise till he concluded his second term in office in 2007.

His successors, Presidents Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan also could not do much.

It is on record though, that it was during the tenure of President Jonathan that some measure of seriousness on the project was witnessed.

After the appointment of former action governor of Lagos State, Barrister Babatunde Raji Fashola as the Minister of Work, many Nigerians assumed the administration of the current president, Muhammadu Buhari would move at a faster rate.

Unfortunately, pace of work has not been exactly enchanting. This has resulted in several accidents where innocent lives of road users are wasted.

The Muhammaud Buhari government needs to do more than the usual to ensure that the reconstruction of this all-important highway is speedily completed to prevent further loss of lives.

In addition to carnage, precious man-hours are lost on the road because of the several bad portions making motorists to spend hours crawling through heavy traffic.

All eyes are now on Mr Babatunde Fashola to live up to expectations by making sure the road is completed in record time.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
