Committed to promoting healthy well-being of the people in Ogun State, the State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the State Government to compel all food vendors operating in the State to provide safety measures against contamination from flies and other unhygienic practices.

The passage of the House Resolution titled: “H.R. No. 008/2018- A Call on the State Government to compel all food vendors operating in the State to provide safety measures against food contamination”, followed a motion moved by the Sponsor, Hon. Akanbi Bankole seconded by Tunde Sanusi and supported by the Whole House through a voice vote.

The resolution partly read: “It is the opinion of this Honourable House, that all foods vendors at every location and shop in Ogun State should not expose food to flies and other contamination, they should make provision for covered display unit (i.e show case) for the food to be sold for people’s consumption”.

Opening debate on the motion, Hon. Bankole canvassed for the promotion of hygiene, as it was harmful to open foods and other consumable items to air-borne diseases, admonishing sanitary inspectors in Local Government Councils and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the State to step up measures at monitoring compliance to ensure the healthy living of the residents, with a charge to his colleague-lawmakers to support the motion.

In their separate contributions, other lawmakers including Adebowale Ojuri, Akinpelu Aina, Olayiwola Ojodu, Ganiyu Oyedeji and Idowu Olowofuja who decried the indiscriminate display of food items at road side, commended the Senator Ibikunle Amosun led- administration for the provision of modern health facilities in the State Health sector, while calling for preventive measures through hand washing and other preventive medicare.

They therefore admonished the State Ministry of Health to intensify effort on the monitoring of hygiene across the State, through sensitization programmes to ensure compliance and imposition of relevant fines where necessary to ensure compliance.

In their submissions, Honourables Olusola Sonuga, Victor Fasanya, Yetunde Adekanbi-Sogbein and the Deputy Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, called on the people to complement government’s efforts at ensuring the re-orientation of food vendors to checkmate any impending epidemic that could arise through intake of contaminated food/drink.
