Ogun State House of Assembly has announced that the bills to amend the Ogun State College of Health Technology Law, 2006, Gateway Polytechnic, Igbesa, Law 2005 and Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu, Law 2008 seek to alter their nomenclatures to meet the present educational, administrative and cultural realities of the institutions for better output.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Suraj Ishola Adekunbi, who stated this during a stakeholders’ forum on the three bills explained that the public hearing was part of the present administration’s drive towards ensuring quality administration in the citadels of learning.

“Today’s gathering is also to promote a culture and evidence-based planning and decision making for good governance which is aimed at further ensuring the Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s administration mission to rebuild Ogun State, he added.

He posited that the change which affected three schools would enable them compete favourably without any fear of rivalry that might arise with institutions in their neighborhood and prevent unnecessary ambiguity and confusion of identity between schools that shared similar nomenclature.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Olayiwola Ojodu assured that the views of the stakeholders would be properly aggregated to achieve the desired results in the name change of the schools.

In their contributions, the stakeholders who contributed to the bill on the Ogun State College of Health Technology including the College Provost, Dr. Abiodun Oladunjoye, Chairman, Parents’ Representative Forum, Pastor A. Eleja, National Alumni President of the College, Comrade Jokotade Ibrahim and Students’ Union President of the School, Comrade Adedayo Elewura supported the change of the institution’s name to a Polytechnic.

They noted that the step would expand the scope of courses being offered in the school, which would also lead to increase students’ enrollment.

On the change of name of the Gateway Polytechnic, Igbesa to the institute of Technology, the Rector, Dr Funke Akinkulere and the Olota of Ota, Oba (Prof) Adeyemi Obalanlege, said the change in the name was meant to give legal backing to the directive from the State Government on the matter; commending the government and the State Assembly for its prompt action on the bill.

In their contribution to the name change of Tai Solarin College of Education,  the Ag. Registrar, of the School, Dr Adeleke Adeboyejo and the Alumni President of the School, Julius Adeyemi, noted that it would help prevent any confusion in the identity as the current same name is being currently shared by Tai Solarin University of Education which was always creating challenges of identity between it and some funding agencies like TETfund and other regulatory bodies.
