  • Pleads With House Of Members-Elect For Cooperation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Oyo State chapter has presented the Certificate of Return to the governor-elect of the state, Engr Seyi Makinde and his deputy, Engr Raufu Olaniyan.

Certificates of Return were also given by  the commission to the 32 House of Assembly members-elect on the platform of three different political parties of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC) and Action Democratic Party, ADP.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Mutiu Agboke presented the certificates at the Banquet Hall of the Premier Hotel, Ibadan on Wednesday, March 27, 2019. The official presentation was monitored by the commission’s National Commissioner in charge of Oyo, Osun and Ekiti States, Prince Adedeji Shoyebi.

The Oyo State Governor-Elect, Seyi Makinde, in his short acceptance speech promised all inclusive government and collective effort to impact on the lives of the people of the state.

While thanking the people of the state for trusting him with their mandate, Makinde urged all Members of the House of Assembly elect to cooperate with him in order to move the state forward.

According to Seyi Makinde, “elections have come and gone, it now requires our collective effort and hard work to make life better for the people of the state.

“I urge all the newly elected members of the Oyo State House of Assembly to cooperate with our in-coming administration so that we can move the state forward.

In his welcome address, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Mutiu Agboke disclosed that the official presentation of Certification of Return is to show ultimate confirmation of an election victory. He added that the action is backed by Section 75 of the Electoral Act of 2010 as amended.

While recalling how parties and candidates participated in the just concluded elections, the INEC boss in the state stated that 42 gubernatorial candidates contested for the seat, while 659 candidates from 46 different political parties contested for the 32 House of Assembly seats.

Barrister Mutiu Agboke said that out of  the 32 members of the states’ Assembly only two are returning members, while the remaining 30 are coming in newly.

The INEC Commissioner further said that the commission has received 17 petitions from the Oyo State Election Petition Tribunal, noting that the petitions – four for senatorial and 13 for House of Representatives.

Barrister Agboke admonished the elected officials not to down play the dreams, feelings and expectations of their constituencies and electorates in general, saying that elections are designed to renew or withdraw mandates.
