The Dr Mike Adenuga-led Telecommunications operator, Globacom, has joined Nigerians in celebrating the country’s Democracy Day.
In a goodwill message, the company said it was delighted with Federal Government’s decision to recognise June 12 as the nation’s Democracy Day.
It noted that by the action, the significance of the election held on June 12, 1993 in deepening democracy in the country had been highlighted.
Globacom said the decision of Nigerians to vote across ethnic and religious lines as well as the resistance to military rule by the populace, after the elections were cancelled, led to enthronement of civil rule in the country in 1999.
The telecommunication giant noted that the determination among Nigerians to nurture and deepen the democratic experience has led to 20 years of civil rule, after a long period of military rule.
“The experience of June 12 is a national watershed in our democratic trajectory. It speaks to Nigerians’ passionate desire for democratic governance, liberty, rule of law, human rights and the inalienable right to vote and be voted for. It is a metaphor that symbolises the country’s rejection of repression of people’s will in any form, shape or size,” Globacom said.
It added: “Twenty-six years on, it can be said that June 12 is largely responsible for the two decades of five successive democratic governments that we have had in the country.”
Globacom urged the different levels of government to strive to provide the benefits of democratic rule to the masses of the country.
The grand masters of data also urged Nigerians to continue to uphold the principles of democracy in all they do and say.
It congratulated them for supporting democracy to take root in the country.
The company restated its commitment to playing a leading role in the digitalisation of Nigeria’s economy, and hoped that democratic culture will eventually lead to the country’s development.
