Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, on Thursday disclosed that many people in the state do not have adequate information about the First Technical University, Ibadan.

He made the assertion when he represented Governor Seyi Makinde as the Special Guest of Honour at the maiden edition of the university’s annual lecture.

While delivering the Visitor’s address, Engr. Olaniyan said “many people lack information about First Technical University”. He was apparently referring to debates all over the state about the ownership of the institution.

Before the lecture, the Deputy Governor had commissioned two 250-seater lecture theaters in the university. He and the Chancellor, Chief Tunde Afolabi also laid the foundation of the first phase of the IGR-funded Workshop/Laboratory complex. The Deputy Governor also took time to attend the exhibition of products of entrepreneurship and vocational training by students of the university.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ayobami Salami described the Guest Lecturer, Professor Toyin Falola, as “an illustrious son of Ibadanland and cultural ambassador who takes the cherished values of the Yorubas with him everywhere he goes”. In appreciating the Deputy Governor, he said “we are excited by the presence of the Governor. We are grateful for your assured support and presence”.

In the course of the lecture, Professor Falola said “if you don’t train people very well, they will become jobless”.  He also advised the First Technical University against duplication. “Universities must not duplicate. Things are changing every day and we should not be left behind. There will be a post oil economy. What will sustain us will be knowledge economy. Universities like this will be our fallback that time”, he said.
