Are you also one of those who heard about the purported demise of Africa’s mathematical icon, Dr Victor Omololu Olunloyo last week? Well, he is hale, hearty and has been talking about the real reason former President Olusegun Obasanjo gave late Chief Bola Ige a ministerial appointment in 1999.
The former governor of Old Oyo State made the revelation when PMParrot paid him a visit at this Molete, Ibadan palatial home on Monday – after a random discussion initiated…

Olunloyo: Where have you been? Did you also hear that they said I died? Well, I am still here o! (laughs)
PMParrot: E ma binu sir (I apologize sir), I have been shuttling between Ebonyi and Enugu States. I was in touch with Aunty Ronke. Ebonyi is far sir.
Olunloyo: Ebonyi?
PMParrot: Yes sir.
Olunloyo: Ebonyi is far o. The capital city is Abakaliki… Ha, that Abakaliki… That is where they killed Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, my good brother.
PMParrot: Killed? He died sir. Or was he assassinated and nobody knew?
Olunloyo: Look at you. I have all the reasons to believe they injected him at the prison in Abakaliki.
You see, after he was killed, those folks then said ‘now is the turn of that man with big belly’ (Olusegun Obasanjo). Fortunately, Bola Ige was there at that time and his mastery of the Hausa language gave him the opportunity of decoding what they were saying in Hausa. He interpreted the ‘now is the turn of the man with big belly’ that they said in Hausa to mean they also wanted to go and give Obasanjo the ‘Yar’Adua treatment’.
PMParrot: So, what did Chief Bola Ige do with the information?
Olunloyo: He immediately arranged for Obasanjo to be informed and necessary actions were taken. That is the main reason Obasanjo gave Bola Ige a ministerial appointment –first as Power Minister then later as Attorney General of the Federation…until he was killed… The warder of Obasanjo’s prison was also given an appointment.
PMParrot: The assassination of Chief Bola Ige was a national disaster…
Olunloyo: Yes, it was. You see, Bola Ige, on that day that he was killed in the evening, he had earlier been to visit his brother at Oluyoro Catholic Hospital, Ibadan where he was recuperating. Later, he was brought back lifeless. Life is so unpredictable.
PMParrot: So unpredictable. This life.
Olunloyo: I can still picture that day. Late Dr Dejo Raimi had called me earlier that day that something serious what going to happen that would rock the whole of Ibadan and indeed, Nigeria… He called me thrice… There was also Reverend Cannon Alayande. I still remember his phone number…02-8101978… This life is so unpredictable… Â
