Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on Sunday night etched their name deeper into continental basketball history with a dominant display that secured their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title and seventh overall.

The historic win, achieved at the Palais des Sports in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, drew instant commendation from President Bola Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi – they both hailed the team’s feat as a proud moment for the nation.

In a celebratory post on his verified X handle, @officialABAT, the President lauded the players and technical crew for their “superb performance” and reaffirmed his unwavering support for the victorious squad.

“You did it, girls! @DtigressNG. Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall,” the President wrote.

“Well done, Coach Rena and the team. You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy. #MissionV – Done & Dusted,” he added, signing off with his initials, “~ PBAT”.

D’Tigress’ victory cements their dominance in African women’s basketball, extending a remarkable winning streak that began in 2017.

Under the guidance of Coach Rena Wakama, the team exhibited discipline, resilience, and tactical superiority throughout the tournament.

With this latest triumph, Nigeria now stands alone at the top as the team with the most consecutive AfroBasket Women titles, underlining the strength of the nation’s women’s basketball programme.
