Tragedy struck in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, as a truck crushed a nine-year-old girl to death in a fatal road accident.
It was learnt on Monday that the incident occurred around Supare Junction along Supare Road on Sunday.
According to a source in the community, the victim, whose identity was initially withheld, was rushed to a nearby hospital immediately after the accident, where she was later confirmed dead.
The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident to PUNCH Metro on Monday.
Jimoh also noted that the driver of the truck had been arrested.
He said, “The Ondo State Police Command regrets to confirm a fatal motor accident in Akungba-Akoko, resulting in the death of a nine-year-old girl, Fatima Ibrahim.
“The victim was reportedly knocked down by an unregistered Mercedes-Benz tipper truck and was immediately rushed to the hospital, where she was sadly confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
“The driver of the vehicle has been arrested, and the vehicle has been recovered for inspection. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident.
“The command commiserates with the family of the deceased and assures the public that justice will be served.”
The PPRO urged motorists to exercise due care and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.
