The Nigerian Police, Rivers State Command, has arrested a man for allegedly hacking his father, retired Marine Captain David Nwoke, to death during a dispute over property at Oro Ekpo Estate, Ada George, in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The tragic incident occurred at Oro Ekpo Estate, Ada George, where residents said they were alerted by the estate’s security personnel around 10 a.m. that one of the landlords had allegedly been killed by his son.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident on Thursday, saying the suspect was in police custody while investigations continued.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, threw residents of the area into mourning as news of the killing spread.

According to a resident who spoke anonymously, neighbors rushed to the scene and found the retired pilot lying in a pool of blood after he was allegedly attacked by his son.

“We received a distress call from the estate gate that one of our landlords had been killed by his son. When we got there, Captain David Nwoke was already lying in his blood after being brutally attacked,” the resident said.

The source added that police officers arrived shortly after being alerted, arrested the suspect, and evacuated the deceased’s body to the morgue.

Residents further alleged that the suspect had previously displayed violent behaviour towards his father and had allegedly assaulted him on several occasions.

According to the resident, the deceased had recently decided to sell one of his properties due to the alleged misconduct of his children, a decision that reportedly angered the suspect.

The source claimed that the suspect allegedly attacked his father from upstairs, pursued him downstairs after he was wounded, and repeatedly stabbed him until he died.

“It appeared to be a deliberate act rather than an accident. From all indications, he planned to kill his father,” the resident alleged.

The incident reportedly occurred in the Rumupekirikom area of Obio/Akpor, near the Gateway axis and close to Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church.

Residents have called on the authorities to ensure justice is served, urging that the law should take its full course to serve as a deterrent against similar acts of violence.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Agabe Blessing Karibo, said the suspect is in police custody.

“I can confirm that the suspect is in police custody. Investigations have commenced with a view to ensuring that justice is served,” she said.
