The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has strongly condemned the alleged ethnic remark made by a police officer in a viral video that has sparked outrage across the country, describing the conduct as unacceptable and contrary to the values of national unity.
In a statement, the Agency expressed concern over footage showing police officers at a checkpoint allegedly demanding gratification from a motorist after searching his vehicle. The controversy deepened following reports that one of the officers threatened that he would have slapped the motorist “if he was an Igbo.”
Reacting to the incident, the NOA said no Nigerian should be subjected to intimidation, discrimination, or humiliation because of ethnic identity, stressing that such behaviour undermines efforts to build a united and inclusive nation.
The Agency noted that the officers’ actions run contrary to the principles of the Nigerian Identity Project and the National Values Charter, which promote patriotism, mutual respect, equity, and the dignity of all citizens regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.
NOA also praised the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for its swift response, particularly the arrest of the officers involved and the commencement of disciplinary proceedings.
According to the Agency, the prompt action demonstrates the commitment of the Police hierarchy to professionalism, accountability, and ethical policing. It expressed confidence that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with established procedures.
The Agency further urged the Police Force to sustain ongoing reforms by identifying and removing personnel whose conduct damages public trust, while acknowledging the contributions of thousands of disciplined and professional officers serving across the country and in international peacekeeping missions.
Calling on Nigerians to reject ethnic profiling and divisive narratives, the NOA emphasized that the nation’s diversity should be seen as a source of strength rather than division.
It urged citizens across ethnic, religious, and political lines to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and national unity, reaffirming that all Nigerians share a common destiny and must remain proud of their collective identity.
