The acting Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr Taiwo Abideen Lasisi, has promised positive changes at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, to maintain its first standard position in the comity of Polytechnics in the country and beyond.
Assuring that he will leave The polytechnic, Ibadan better than he met it, he said security challenges and similar ones were being handled with the support of the various security agencies, including the institution’s internal security apparatus with the support of members of staff and students.
The Rector stated this while receiving a team of officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) led by the Divional Officer of Irepodun, Superintendent Odesina Olugbenga, who has the polytechnic, Ibadan, University of Ibadan, and neighboring areas under his jurisdiction.
Dr. Lasisi further said the security of lives and prosperity was paramount and of personal interest to him.
He said he has strengthened the security apparatus within the institution to curtail inappropriate actions and activities of students and people of like minds.
As a result, he said he has created an operations department within the security unit of the institution to report directly to him, adding that even at the dead of the night, his telephone number was available to the personnel of this unit.
Dr. Lasisi commended the Nigeria police, the Department of State Security Service(DSS), Amotekun corps, and NSCDC for always responding and assisting when their services are required
Speaking in the same vein, Mr. John Makinde, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, also appreciated the NSCDC and said the visit would further strengthen the bond between the polytechnic management and the NSCDC.
Earlier, the divisional officer, Superintendent Olugbenga Odesina, disclosed that the Polytechnic, Ibadan, was under his security surveillance and that he had been paying special attention to the institution because of the student population there.
He said the federal government is now focusing security attention on all schools under the federal government’s safe school programme.
Under this scheme, all schools must be protected, and crimes averted and peaceful coexistence encouraged.
In another development, the acting Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr. Taiwo Abideen Lasisi, has observed that unemployment is one of the global problems confronting nations, adding that conscious efforts should be made to tackle it.
He made the observation while receiving officers of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment who paid him a courtesy call in his office.
The officers were on the visit to inform and collaborate with the institution on ways to prepare the students of the institution for the labour market.
The Labour Ministry would also organise a one-day workshop for 80 students in the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies on Friday, 14th August, while other faculties would also be attended to on a later day as scheduled.
He assured the officers from the federal Ministry of Labour and Employment led by Mrs. Lawal Adebisi Omolola that The Polytechnic, Ibadan, would key into the programme and give maximum support to ensure the success of the programme.
Earlier, the leader of the three-member Labour team, Mrs. Lawal Adebisi Omolola, had sought the cooperation and support of the management of the institution for the proposed employment training.
She said the training would assist the students to think outside the box when seeking employment.
