Super Eagles’ forward, Cyriel Dessers has revealed that he was close to joining La Liga side Celta Vigo in January, but Dutch club Heracles Almelo rejected the move.
Dessers, who joined Belgian side Genk in the summer, was linked with severeal European clubs, admitted he held talks with SPAL but was not interested in joining them as they were battling relegation in the Serie A. SPAL were eventually relegated.
Atalanta, Cagliari, Galatasaray and Feyenoord were also rumoured to be keen on signing the 24-year-old striker in January.
“In my head I was almost at Celta, but Heracles blocked the transfer,” the striker told La Derniere Heure.
“They needed their top scorer.
“I also spoke with SPAL, but the club was last in Serie A and that didn’t really appeal to me.”
Dessers finished as the joint top scorer in the Dutch topflight with 15 goals before returning to Belgium to hometown club Genk, who signed him for €4m.
He has scored once in three games for Genk since the start of the season.
