Ogun State’s House of Assembly has assured the Ogun State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) that its request for the take-over of payment of Primary School Teachers by the Federal or State Government will be included in the course of the ongoing constitutional review.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon Suraju Ishola Adekunbi, who gave the assurance while receiving members of the union led by Comrade Titi Adebanjo explained that the constitutional amendment by the National Assembly was a public affair aimed at further strengthening all sectors of the nation’s economy.

Adekunbi remarked that primary education remained the bedrock of every educational development, promising that the State House of Assembly would consider the remuneration and other welfare of the teachers when it is the turn of the State Houses of Assembly to contribute to the constitutional review.

He applauded the teachers for their commitment and genuine concern for the advancement of the education sector in the State, while charging them to continue to contribute their quota to the success of the qualitative education programme of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration.

The Speaker emphasized that the current government in the State was irrevocably committed to the educational development of the State and had invested heavily on infrastructure, equipment and personnel.

Earlier in his submissions, Comrade Titi Adebanjo said that the NUT was in support of local government autonomy but pleaded for the placement of primary teachers’ salary on the first line charge of either the Federal or the State government, pointing out that the local councils as presently constituted in the country could not afford to pay the teachers’ remuneration.
