As part of plans to discover boxing talents at the grassroots, Alado Royal Council has included a boxing competition named after the Ibadan born boxer, Ridwan ‘Scorpion’ Oyekola as part of activities marking Iyake Olomoyoyo International Festival 2022 and Alado’s fifth Crown Anniversary.
The grand finale of the event, according to the planning committee, will be graced by the Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde and his deputy, Barr. Bayo Lawal while His Royal Majesty, Oba Ademola Olugbile Folakanmi, the Alado of Ado Awaye Kingdom will be the chief host.
The boxing event that started on Wednesday 16th will end on Saturday 19th November at the Festival Arena, foot of Ado mountain Ago Afin, Ado Awaye, Oyo State, while other activities, such as Bike display, Jogging, Mountain climbing competition, Cultural display will also be held.
Boxers that will slug it out include Waheed Afeez against Tiolat Ayelabegan in Bantam weight category, Raheem Ridwan will face Kazeem Azeez in Light weight, Adeniran Niyi and Abiodun Olowoodan will lock horns in the welterweight, Rahman Sodiq will battle Olalekan Quyum in the super featherweight while Olalekan Hammed will confront Awali Adeosun welter weight.
The manager of Ridwan Scorpion Oyekole, Sola Ayodele who is also the CEO of Core Afrique Boxing Promotion (COABOX) said his firm is happy to support the amateur boxing event being named after his boxer, which definitely will serve as a motivation for other young boxer from amateur to turn professional.
“I’m happy that Scorpion is now a symbol of motivation for other boxers in Oyo State and youths are now aspiring to come into boxing because of the success recorded by Ridwan Scorpion, and that is why we at COABOX are supporting this boxing event”, said Ayodele popularly known as Sola Ford.
