Nigerian Wrestlers Shine At African Wrestling Championship

Nigerian wrestlers drew attention of all at the just concluded 2017 African Wrestling Championship as they finished the competition in Marrakech, Morocco on Sunday with a total haul of eleven medals.

The female wrestlers’ medals comprised of six gold and two silvers, while their male counterparts won three gold medals.

The female gold medalists are Mercy Genesis, 48 kg; Odunayo Adekuoroye, 55kg; Aminat Adeniyi, 58kg; Blessing Oborududu, 63kg; Kemeasuodei Dressman, 69kg; and Gofit Winnie, 75kg, while Bose Samuel, 53kg; and Bisola Makanjuola, 60kg silver are medalists.

The male wrestlers had hoped to replicate what their female counterparts achieved on Saturday in the championship, and the Nigerian contingent did not disappoint.

Welson Ebikweminomo defeated Algeria‘s Kherbache Abdelhak to pick gold in the 57.0kg.

The other winners are John Ogbonna Emmanuel and Tamaru Soso, who edged out Tunisia‘s Ghanmi Maher and South Africa‘s Erasmus Martin in the 70.kg and 97.0kg respectively in final on Sunday.
