The dream of Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr to have the service of Chelsea defender, Ola Aina to play for Nigeria in the all important 2017 Africa Cup of Nations will have to wait as the player needs to apply to football governing body, FIFA, to switch national teams from England to Nigeria.

Aina, who is eligible to represent the Super Eagles if the grandfather rule is invoked, though he has caps for England U16 and U20 national teams, will apply for approval from FIFA next week.

“The documentation has been done and in the new week, it will be submitted to FIFA for approval,” an official of the Nigerian Federation said.

“How fast FIFA and the FA in England work on this will determine how soon his application will come through.”

While Ola Aina’s application is being considered by FIFA, he won’t be allowed to feature for the English and Nigerian national teams.

The former England U19 captain trained with the Super Eagles in London in March.
