OYOMESI ‘Romances’ Traditional Rulers To Launch Character Education

As part of the campaign to improve on moral education standard to correct anti-social behaviors in Oyo state’s education system, the OYOMESI Project Committee (OPC) has engaged traditional and other relevant stakeholders to launch character building education.

The occasion was also used to join the rest of the world to celebrate the annual World Culture Day.

The event, which held at the Civic Centre, Idi Ape, Ibadan had full attendance of traditional rulers, representatives of National Parents Teachers Association (NAPTAN), Oyo State chapter, All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Association of Primary School Head teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), private school owners, publishers and publishing outfits as well as students across all zones in the state.

Among the traditional rulers in attendance were the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, who was represented by Balogun of Ibadan land, High Chief Owolabi Olakulehin, Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola, the Oluwo of Ibadanland, Chief Wahab Idowu Popoola, High Chief Eddy Oyewole, and High Chief Hamidu Ajibade.

Also on ground were members of Association of Mogajis in Ibadan and members Egbe Akomolede ati Asa Yoruba, led by the Chairman, Banjo Akinlabi.

In her speech, Dr. Bisi Akin-Alabi, who is also the Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Education, disclosed that the Oyo State Model Education System interventions (OYOMESI) was designed to fill pot holes, as well as finding the missing moral education in the state education system.

She emphasized that presently the project is a pilot scheme which will last for a year, adding that after the first year evaluation, it will be subject to approval by the state House of Assembly to be part of school system curriculum.

Dr. Akin-Alabi noted that “the first strand, Character Building Education, which is being launched today, is to bring back the lost moral value in the state education system with the help of all stakeholders, and particularly, the traditional rulers, which serve as positive role models.”

She disclosed that on Wednesday, 24th of May, 2017, the State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi will be decorated as the Prime Positive Role Model by the OYOMESI Project Committee and Prime Oyo Stars.

Dr. Akin-Alabi added that the governor will use the opportunity to launch the OYOMESI portal, presenting e-learning tools as well as rewards cards.

Alhaja Bolatito Adebisi, in her remarks stated that “the programme was slated for today to commemorate World Culture Day, as declared by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to contribute to the building of peace, eradication of poverty, promotion of sustainable development and inter cultural dialogue through education, science and culture.”

She expressed that OYOMESI would concentrate on the promotion of cultural heritage such as voices, values, traditions and oral history through clothing, shelter and religion to stimulate students in building sound character to pursue the goals that will lead to positive transformation of the state in line with the repositioning, transformation and restoration agenda of Governor Abiola Ajimobi-led government in Oyo State.

Delivering his welcome address, Mr. Adeyemi Adekola commended the traditional rulers and other stakeholders for their determination and zeal to support government’s repositioning agenda in the education sector. He reiterated the commitment of the present administration towards the delivery of not only sound but quality education.
