Ogun House Passes Bill To Protect People With Disability

Determined to protect the vulnerable group especially people with disabilities against any form of violence so as to promote equity, equality and justice in the society, the Ogun State House of Assembly, Thursday, passed the bill protecting “People With Disability”.

The bill titled: “HB No. 12/OG/ 2017- A Bill for a Law to Eliminate all forms of Discrimination Against persons with Disabilities, Equalize their opportunities in all aspect of life in the society and for other matters incidental thereto” was passed during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Suraju Ishola Adekunbi, following the presentation of report of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development’s by its Chairman, Hon. Yetunde Sogbein- Adekanbi.

Sogbein, thereafter moved the motion for the adoption of the report which was seconded by Hon. Viwanu Ojo and supported by the Whole House through a voice vote after which the bill was later read and adopted Clause- by – Clause by the Committee of the whole House.

The motion for the third reading of the bill was later moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Adeyinka Mafe, seconded by Hon. Sogbein- Adekanbi, while the Clerk of the Assembly, Engr. Lanre Bisiriyu, did the third reading of the bill.

Speaker Adekunbi, thereafter directed that the clean copy of the bill be forwarded to the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun for his assent.

It would be recalled that stakeholders at the public hearing earlier organized by the Assembly passed a vote of confidence on the bill expressing that when passed by the Assembly and signed into law by Governor Amosun would eliminate all forms of discrimination against persons with disabilities, equalize their opportunities in all aspect of life in the society and it will create a level playing field for all concerned to attain their goal in life without let or hindrance.

In the same vein, the Assembly also passed the bill for a law to provide for the Administration of Criminal Justice in the High Court and Magistrates’ Courts of Ogun State.

The passage of the bill titled: “ A bill for a Law to provide for the Resolution of Disputes by Arbitration and Other Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms as well as the establishment of the Ogun State Court of

Arbitration and for connected purposes” was sequel to the presentation of Committee report by Chairman House Committee on Justice,  Ethics and Public Petitions,  Hon. Adebowale Ojuri, who thereafter moved the motion for the adoption of the report and was seconded by Oyenuga Olufowobi.

The process saw to the clause –to-clause reading and adoption of the bill by the Committee of the Whole after which the Majority Leader,  Adeyinka Made moved the motion for the third reading and seconded by his Minority counterpart,  Olawale Alausa with the support of the Whole House, the Assembly Clerk, Engr. Lanre Bisiriyu did the third reading.

Passing the Bill, the Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Suraju Ishola Adekunbi directed that the clean copy of the bill be sent to the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun for his assent.

The bill when signed into law would develop the process of justice administration in the State to meet international standards.
