During the week, the Nigerian Senate gave certain specific instructions to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris on the much talked-about killings by Fulani Herdsmen in Benue, Taraba and other states.

The Legislators’ wishes had to do with the prompt arrest of those responsible for the heinous crimes against Nigerians.

The Senate went ahead to also instinct that the perpetrators must be handed over to the Attorney-General for prosecution. ‘These culprits must be arrested within 14 days’, the Senate insisted.

The Senate was further quoted as saying unanimously that “as a responsible parliament, we must rise up to the situation by saying enough is enough”.

Unfortunately for the lawmakers, Nigerians expects more than rhetorics. They deserve solution to the problem. Instant solution, for the matter.

Moreover, the issue at hand is more than both the IGP or the Senate. It is deep rooted. The issue of Fulani Herdsmen predates the Muhammadu Buhari administration. So, it must be approached holistically.

In addition, there are so many questions waiting to be answered. Nigerians want to know the exact position of the Nigerian constitution concerning grazing. They also wish to know why States cannot have state police.

All in all, Nigerians have been asking online and offline if the trending story about President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment of solely Fulani men as head of the Country’s security organisations is true or not. Nigerians are also curious to know if the issue of restructuring of the country will ever be on the ‘front burner’ as promised by the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) during its electioneering campaign three years ago.

What Nigeria need is not lip service or game on the gallery but realistic solution to the problem of insecurity in the country. Aggression against Nigerians by the notorious Boko Haram elements is now being compounded by recalcitrant Fulani herdsmen.

These loads are too heavy for Nigerians to shoulder. This is the right time for the nation’s leaders and those in positions of authority to rise up to their responsibilities. Peace is attainable. All must work assiduously to achieve it.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
