All is now set for this year’s edition of Ibadan City Marathon Race as it has recorded an historic entry with almost 3,000 people registered to participate in various categories of races such as wheel chair race, artisan race and corporate race introduced to add colour to the competition.

This was disclosed in Ibadan by the director of publicity for the event, Tunde Olawuwo who doubles as the news editor of the Ibadan based private radio station, Splash FM, the initiator of the race that entered its 10th edition this year.

Olawuwo explained that the idea to introduce the various races was to create a credible platform to raise funds for some noble initiatives.

“These include running for the blind, the mentally challenged children, female sex workers rehabilitation homes, children with disabilities and Home for rehabilitation of street boys.

“These races that are not more than 5 to 10 kilometers attract 100,000 Naira per cause, and these proceeds would be given to the selected homes by whoever champions the causes to run the race. There are also opportunities for artisans that their vocations do not permit them to exercise regularly, while one of our sponsors, Kayrom Lee Gym and Fitness Center would also conduct free medical test for them”, Olawuwo noted.

He added that the new innovations introduced to the race to commemorate a decade of the event and an online registration portal created for easy access to prospective runners seem to be responsible for the record entry recorded for the event that will be flagged off in the early hours of Sunday 8th April inside the main-bowl of Obafemi Awolowo Stadium Ibadan.

Olawuwo, however, counseled the first timers on some useful tips that might help them before, during and after the race, saying breakfast is not advisable before a long distance race.

“Running a marathon puts a huge amount of stress on your immune system. The morning of your race, mix up a healthy smoothie containing protein, strawberries or orange juice. The glutamine combined with vitamin C from strawberries and orange juice will help keep your immune system strong from start to finish and long after.

“After the race grab something light to eat, such as banana. As soon as possible, change into some dry, warm clothes, you will feel like a new person when you put on a pair of fresh socks and comfortable shoes that have plenty of room to accommodate your newly swollen feet”, Olawuwo enthused.

Meanwhile, the executive governor of Oyo State Senator Abiola Ajimobi is expected to be the special guest that will flag-off the race off while the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung is also being expected in Ibadan to grace the event as the Chairman of Splash FM, High Chief Adebayo Akande gets ready to be their chief host.
