Ogun House To Agency: Ensure Effective Waste Management

As part of its effort at ensuring a clean and healthy environment, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the State Government to provide waste station and dump sites in each of the local government areas in the State for proper waste management and control.

The passage of the resolution followed a motion moved by the sponsor and a member representing Obafemi Owode State Constituency, Tunde Sanusi, seconded by the Minority Leader, Olawale Alausa and supported by the Whole House through a voice vote during a plenary presided over by Speaker Suraju Ishola Adekunbi at the Assembly Complex, Oke-mosan, Abeokuta.

Opening a debate on the motion, Sanusi who explained the need for the creation of the transfer loading Station and additional dump sites across the 20 Local Government Councils and 37 LCDAs, said the State had witnessed influx of Industrial investment brought about by the ongoing massive infrastructural development in the State.

He explained that the sites when created would address indiscriminate dumping of refuse as being experienced in some parts of the State and would also assist industries to dump their wastes at designated points.

Corroborating the Sponsor’s submission, members including Olawale Alausa, Idowu Olowofuja, Adebowale  Ojuri, Jimi Otukoya and Oyenuga Olufowobi harped on the need for waste being generated from industries and homes across the State to be effectively managed, admonishing residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in water ways to avoid flooding.

They added that the sites upon creation, would facilitate employment opportunities for the teaming populace as well as prevent outbreak of disease, while transforming waste to energy to further widen the revenue base of the State.

Also, Honourables Ganiyu Oyedeji and Akanbi Bankole posited that a healthy environment would bring about buoyant economy, calling for the speedy enforcement of the resolution.

Also speaking, the Majority Leader, Adeyinka Mafe and Deputy Speaker, Olakunle Olumo assured that the Assembly would consider the amendment of the Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) Law with a view to establishing the State Waste Management Agency, just as they tasked OGEPA to step up measures at ensuring effective operation across the State.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State House of Assembly has lauded the State Barbers Association , Ijebu-Ode Chapter led by Mr Anthony Ayodele for partnering with political leaders in creating jobs opportunities for members.

Speaker Adekunbi gave the commendation while playing host to the Executive members of the association with a caution that they should avoid forcing people to join their association but rather make the association a toast of prospective members.

Adekunbi in company of his colleague lawmakers assured that government would continue to encourage all the stakeholders to boost their business investments.

Earlier in his speech, Ayodele noted that the mutual interdependence among all arms of government in the State had led to unprecedented development in the State; appreciating the State Assembly for enacting people-oriented bills that had aided socio-economic development of the State.
