The Ibarapa East Constituency by-election which was held on Saturday to fill the vacant position created by the death of former speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Michael Adeyemo has been won by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Candidate of the PDP in the election, Adebo Ogundoyin, who is the son of the late industrialist and football club owner, Adeseun Ogundoyin, scored a total of 6277 votes to beat the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the election, Kunle Adeyemo, who scored 4619 votes.

Thirty six year-old Adeyemo is the younger brother of the late speaker, who died on April 27, 2018 in Ibadan. The late speaker was sworn in as Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly on June 12, 2015. He died at the age of 47.

Ogundoyin, 31, won six out of 10 wards. He won the four wards in Eruwa, his home town, and two other wards in Lanlate, hometown of his contender.  The APC candidate, Adeyemo, won four wards in Lanlate. Accord Party didn’t win any ward in the election but got 2855 votes.

The result was a clear departure from the victory scored by the APC in the area during the last local government election held a few weeks ago in the state. The PDP did not take part in the election. Some members of the APC were of the opinion that the loss was due to the internal wrangling that has spilt the party into two factions in the state.
