Super Eagles winger, Alex Iwobi has admitted that he has to be more professional and prove himself under new boss Unai Emery after sparking fury from fans last season.

Iwobi agreed a five-year contract with Arsenal and knows he has a lot still left to do.

He was snapped at a wild drug-fuelled house party in January, just a day before the Gunners’ woeful 4-2 FA Cup third-round defeat to Championship club Nottingham Forest.

Then-manager Arsene Wenger slammed his antics as “unacceptable” and promised to fine him.

However, Wenger refused to axe him, despite angry supporters branding the player a “waste of space”, an “idiot” and calling for him to be sacked.

Now, as Iwobi prepares for the new season under Wenger’s Spanish successor, he has spoken about the incident for the first time.

“I received deserved criticism, of course. I have to be more professional,” he told The Sun.

“I am not this young boy any more as I have been in the Premier League for three seasons now, so the expectations are always going to grow the older you get.

“I have to be professional and knuckle down, and not let any distraction affect me.”

Iwobi has been at Arsenal since he was nine and, until now, has only known Wenger as the boss.

“It’s going to be a bit strange at first, because all my Arsenal life has been about Arsene Wenger,” he added.

“But I look forward to the new challenge. Growing up I played in several positions.

“I’ve played as a striker, on the wing, as No 10 and all across midfield, but my favourite position is central midfield.

“That’s where I feel most comfortable, but if I am told to play in any position I will be happy.”
