Nigeria’s surviving representative in continental football this season, Enyimba boosted their chances of making it to the quarter-final stage of the CAF Confederation Cup after beating their hosts Djoliba of Mali 1-0 in their Group C encounter at the Modibo Keita Stadium, Bamako on Sunday.

It was the first way win for the two-time African champions in the group stage of the competition ‎having lost their two previous games against CARA Brazzaville and Williamsville without scoring a goal.

The hosts dominated proceedings for the major part of the game but were unable to beat Enyimba goalkeeper, Theophilus Afelokhai who made a number vital saves to keep his side in the game.

The People’s Elephant were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute after Sunday Adetunji who recently linked up with the club from local rivals, Abia Warriors was hacked down in the box by a Djoliba defender.

Ghanaian midfielder, Farouk Mohammed coolly slotted the ball into the net to hand his side all three points in the game.

Usman Abdallah’s men now occupy second position in the group with nine points same as Congo’s CARA Brazzaville who edged out Williamsville Atthelic Club of Ivory Coast 3-1 earlier on Sunday.

The Aba giants will host CARA Brazzaville in their final group game at the newly Enyimba International Stadium on August 29.

They are hoping to become the first Nigerian club to win the CAF Confederation Cup.
