Ahead of the forthcoming general elections in Nigeria, the wife of the Oyo State Governor, Chief (Dr) Mrs Florence Ajimobi, last Thursday, 30th August, 2018, led women aspiring for different elective positions from Oyo State to a one-day summit in Abuja.
The said summit was organized by the National Council for Women Societies and Women in Politics Forum in collaboration with the office of the wife of the President, held at National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Abuja.
Mrs Ajimobi who had earlier raised concern on the need to allow more women to occupy elective positions so as to enjoy more dividends of democracy, disclosed that women in the state stand to gain a lot if they emerge as party candidates for various positions and eventually go on to win the elections.
Addressing the participants at the Oyo State Government Lodge, Asokoro Abuja, Mrs Ajimobi urged the women to support each other, especially where there are more than one female aspirants vying for the same position.
While declaring the Summit with the theme “Increasing Women Participation in Nigeria Democratic Process” open, the country’s First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari, who enjoined the women not to be discouraged, urged them to aspire for different political offices in order to have a say in the decision making bodies in the society.
She said election of women is achievable because women make up the larger body of voters and as such can determine the fate of any election, adding that religious and political leaders should support this project.
