Vocational Skills: Over 3,000 Trained By Ogun State’s Women Affairs Ministry

Committed to building a sustainable livelihood for women to achieve a just society devoid of discrimination, Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has trained over 3, 000 women and young mothers on different vocations to promote self-sustenance.

The State Commissioner in the Ministry, Mrs Biola Kufile-Okonji disclosed this while briefing members of the State House of Assembly Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development on the achievements of her agency during the 2018 budget assessment visit in Abeokuta.

Okonji explained that the trainings under the mobile skill acquisition programme organized by the Ministry included liquid soap making, perfume and small chops sessions.

The Commissioner, represented by the Director for Social Welfare Services, Mr Olurotimi Sotubo said that over 800 women were also trained at the Women Development Centre at Oke-Ilewo in different sessions such as catering, fashion designing, barbing, tie and dye as well as make-ups amongst others.

She remarked that the Ministry during its seventh phase of empowerment in May, 2018 also gave N200m revolving loan with a subsidized one digit interest rate to boost business investment of the beneficiaries.

Okonji added that 250 teenage girls from Owode Titun Community in Ota and Ijoko Lemode in Ifo were equally trained at Women Development Centre, Ota on sexual reproductive health issues.

Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Julianah Akintayo, commended the Ministry for intensifying efforts to meet its projected revenue target for the year, while urging them not to rest on their oars.

In their various remarks, Honourables Rasaq Oduntan, Ganiyu Oyedeji, Adebiyi Adeleye and Yetunde Sogbein admonished the officials to be pro-active in sanitizing the society and protect the rights of children, women and other vulnerable groups.
