Fayemi’s Government To School Heads: Refund Fees Collected Or Face Sanctions

As part of the new education policy in Ekiti State ordered by the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Heads for Public Primary and Secondary Schools in the state have been officially directed and instructed by the government to ensure the refund of all the unauthorized fees and levies earlier collected by them at the beginning of the 2018/2019 academic year back to the pupils, students as well as to their parents.

This was contained in a release signed by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr. Odunayo Ogunmola to the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi on Tuesday and made to available to PMParrot.com in the capital city of the state.

Said the statement, “The Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi who is directly in-charge of overseeing the Educational Sector in the State urged the Head Teachers and Principals of Public Primary and Secondary Schools in his Office on Tuesday stressed that the Education Development Levies and other unauthorized fees remain abolished in the State.

“The Deputy Governor further directed that the evidences of such refunds must be brought to the Ministry of Education for verification. The Deputy Governor equally stressed that where such fees have been collected and remitted into government coffers, such schools should bring the evidence of such remittance to the Ministry of Education”.

According to the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, he said: “the action was consequent upon the Executive Order 001 signed by the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi on the 24th of October, 2018 abolishing payment of Education Development Levies and other unauthorized fees in the State”.

The statement reads: “consequent upon the Executive Order 001 signed by the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, has ordered a full compliance by the Heads of all Public Primary and Secondary Schools in Ekiti State that no pupil of primary and student of secondary schools in Ekiti State should pay any unauthorized fees or levies, especially the Education Development Levy any longer. That in case where such fees, especially the Education Development Levies have been collected from pupils and students from this first term (2018/2019 academic session), such fees collected must be returned or refunded to the pupils and students and evidence of such refunds must be brought to the Ministry of Education for verification. That where such fees have been collected and remitted into government coffers, such schools should bring evidence of such remittance to the Ministry of Education”.

Present at the meeting with the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi were the Parent-Teachers Associations (PTAs), School Based Management Committees (SBMCs), the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education, Teaching Service Commission (TSC) and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), All Area Education Officers, State Chapter of All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Association of Primary School Heads of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Principals of Government Colleges/Science Colleges, Principals, Gifted Academy International, Afao/Special Schools, Principals of all Public Secondary Schools and Ekiti State Chapter of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS).
