The Oyo State House of Assembly has passed the State’s Bureau of Physical Planning and Development Control Bill, 2018 into law after it has passed through final stages of processing.

While enumerating the importance of the passage of the bill at plenary on Thursday, Speaker of the House, Honourable Joshua Olagunju Ojo said that the law will basically address housing related issues, either in form of residential, commercial and industrial.

Hon. Olagunju said that the law will standardize all processes involved in building and physical planning for a safe and standard environment. He noted further that in order to address the notorious issue of building collapses witnessed recently in the state, provision has been made for the coordination of physical planning projects and programmes.

He, therefore, called on all relevant professionals such as structural engineers, quantity surveyors, architects among others to ensure compliance with statutory physical planning, development plans and standards in the state.

Hon. Olagunju also implored all stakeholders and those saddled with the responsibility of building construction and development to guarantee full enforcement of the law and strict adherence to laid down rules and regulations.

Hon. Peter Oyetunji, who represents Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere state constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Lands, Housing and Survey in his argument, stated that part of essentials of the law is to assist operations of the Bureau of Physical Planning and Development Control in Oyo State which has been in operation without legal back up over the years.

He attributed recent cases of building collapse in the country to non compliance with rules and regulations by developers, noting that the law will address that while defaulters will be sanctioned according to the law.
