The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has charged students and members of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC to join hands with the Commission and other anti-corruption agencies in the country in the fight against economic and financial crimes and corruption.
He gave the charge at the maiden edition of the Enugu North Anti-Corruption CDS Inter-School Debate, which held at the Enugu North Local Government Town Hall, June 13, 2019.
The Anti-corruption czar made this remark through Chris Oluka, Head, Public Affairs, EFCC Enugu Zone, who represented the Zonal Head, Usman Imam.
He stressed that the fight against corruption is a fight for all.
“Nigeria is yours to safeguard and it is the responsibility of each and every one of you to be determined to be a person of integrity before joining the fight,” he said.
He further encouraged them to strive to be independent and enterprising, adding that, parents must inculcate in young ones, attributes such as independence, integrity, and contentment.
He said: “If you say the government did not give you job, it might also be as a result of failure from the family to inculcate the spirit of independence and entrepreneurship right from the family.
“As you make your bed, so you lie on it. So make your bed very rosy.”
He also educated the secondary school students on the various forms of corruption perpetrated at their level and the consequences of such actions.
The EFCC boss applauded the Anti-Corruption CDS Group for incorporating younger ones in the fight against corruption, pointing out that starting out this early will mould them into people of integrity and great value to their society and to the nation.
The debate, which had two sessions with “Technological Innovation: a tool for Fighting Corruption” and “Family Failure: The Foundation for Corrupt Practices” as topics featured four schools in Enugu – Government Secondary School, Independence Layout; Queens High School, Ogui; Command Day secondary School, Abakpa, and Day Secondary School, GRA.
Queens Secondary School represented by Ezeugwu Chidebere, Anene Kosisochukwu Grace and Chime adaobi Jenifer emerged overall winner followed by Command secondary school. All the schools were rewarded with medal of participation, winner’s plaque and gift items from the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Fraud Offences Commission, ICPC.
The event was graced by the Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC Enugu Command, A.E. Okeh; Public Relations Officer of the ICPC, South East Zone, Mr Godwin Achile, and Mrs. Bethel Udeh, from the EFCC. Teachers from four participating schools were also in attendance.
