Mr Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned students to keep off corruption because of its risk factors to their future.
He stated this as the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Commission took its awareness and reorientation campaign towards crime prevention to students of Kingsley College of Education, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
Magu, who was represented by the second-in-command of the zone, Mr Dare Folarin, admonished the students of the school to shun corruption because of the dangers involved.
According to Magu,”I plead with you all my brothers and sisters, don’t engage in internet fraud so that you will not see yourself in a place where you would not like. You must be good ambassadors of your parents; dress properly within and outside the school. You must have respect for elders because one day, you too will become elders.”
While specifically warning the students to steer clear of internet fraud, Magu said: “As you all know, internet fraud gives Nigeria bad names abroad. Many foreigners don’t want to come and invest here because of internet fraud. Their mentality is that this country is not safe in terms of cyber security.”
While enjoining the students to join the EFCC in the fight against corruption, the EFCC boss reiterated that the Commission does not witch-hunt anyone. “We are all stakeholders in the fight against corruption. We must work together to move this country forward. Just last week, the Kwara State governor was in our office to collect the monies belonging to the state that we recovered from corrupt individuals. These monies were supposed to be used for projects and the development of the state but they diverted these monies. You can now see the effect of corruption.”
According to Magu, “If you have a friend who is corrupt, and the person is not ready to change, please report him or her to the EFCC. You ladies be careful of the friends you keep. If any one requests for your account number and fraudulent monies enter your account, you will be held accountable.”
In his closing remarks, at the event organised by the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Magu informed the students that the fundamental problem of this country was corruption and that the only way to come out of it was to shun it.
