The former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and member of the Advisory Council in the state, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu has urged all members of the assembly to work together in unity and harmony to ensure good governance in the state.
Senator Sunmonu made the call during her visit to the Speaker, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin recently.
Sunmonu, who was the Speaker during the seventh assembly expressed her happiness with the crop of lawmakers in the Ninth Oyo state house of Assembly. She described the composition as a combination of the old and young minds.
She noted that the vibrancy and youthfulness of the Speaker, Hon Adebo, who is one of the beneficiaries of the Not Too Young to Run Act is making the Ninth Oyo Assembly one of the most active in the country.
Senator Sunmonu advised the lawmakers to work together irrespective of their party differences and affiliations towards making laws that will enhance good governance and also make life meaningful and bearable for the citizenry.
Sunmonu disclosed that she has retired from active politics, noting that age is not on her side to be jostling for any political office again. She added that she is available to render political advice to politicians.
According to her, “I am still in politics and I am available to give political advice to politicians who believe and promote good governance. That is why I am supporting Governor Seyi Makinde as one of the members of his political Advisory Committee. But I am too old now at Sixty-five to start jostling for political post, hence I will not contest election again in Nigeria.
“I am available for good governance and this is what I will continue to stand for. I urge all the lawmakers to put their constituency first in whatever they do so that posterity can judge them right.”
Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin specially commended Senator Sunmonu for her leadership and mentor-ship roles for the Ninth Oyo State House of Assembly, saying that members have continued to benefit from her immense political, administrative and legislative experiences.
Hon Ogundoyin described the former Speaker as a reliable pillar of support for the present administration in Oyo state and indeed for the state’s assembly.
He disclosed that Senator Sunmonu has not only made history by becoming the first female lawmaker and indeed Speaker in Oyo State, but also as one of the Speakers in the history of the state who led a rancour free house of Assembly and a house with a harmonious working relationship with the executive arm of government.
“I am happy to receive my mother , a senior Speaker in the Oyo Assembly and a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in my office. Your advice and support at all times have been helping me in piloting the affairs of the assembly. I thank you most sincerely for being there for us at all times.”
