The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin has said that the purpose to reshuffle the House’s standing committees is for more effective oversight functions.

Hon. Ogundoyin, while announcing the names of the reconstituted chairmen of the 27 House standing committees, disclosed that the process was carried out to promote the goodwill of the state’s assembly particularly as regards the oversight functions.

The Speaker urged the chairmen and members of the standing committees to prioritize their oversight functions in order to promote the goodwill of the state assembly.

“Your oversight functions are to aid the activities of the Oyo State government, hence every member must be actively involved in the committee assignments. It is not to witch hunt anybody but to assist government in proper implementation and execution of duties and responsibilities.

“I am convinced the ninth Oyo Assembly has what it takes to enhance good governance, promote accountability and serve as watchdog to other arms of government including ministries, agencies and parastatals,” Hon. Ogundoyin said.

The chairmen of the committees as announced by the Speaker included Hon. Akeem Mustapha, Public Accounts, Finance and Appropriation, Hon. Ademola  Olusegun Popoola, Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters and Honors Committee, Hon. Olamide Francis Olagoke, Inter-Parliamentary Relations, Hon. Olatunde Taofeeq  Kehinde, Works and Transport Committee and Hon. Akeem Obadara, Security and Strategy.

Others are Hon. Kazeem Olayanju, Information, Media and ICT, Hon. Bimbo Oladeji, Women Affairs and Community Development.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State House of Assembly has called for the urgent review and harmonization of the state laws effective from 2000.

The motion for the review and harmonization was raised by Hon. Hakeem Adedibu representing Iwajowa state constituency.

He noted that the last review and harmonization was carried out in year 2000, saying that there are several new and amended legislations that are yet to be harmonised.

The Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin said that it is imperative to toe the path of international best practices by reviewing and harmonizing the state laws for the purpose of consistency, application and compliance.

He, therefore, directed the House Committee on Public Petitions and Judiciary to work with the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice as well as the State Ministry of Justice on the possible review and harmonization of the Oyo State laws.
