Francis Uzoho, Super Eagles’ goalkeeper made his first appearance in over a year and kept a clean sheet since he suffered a knee ligament injury during Nigeria’s international friendly against Brazil in Singapore.

The Nigeria international was handed a starting role in APOEL Nicosia’s 3-0 win over PAEEK in a Cypriot Cup clash on Wednesday.

Uzoho, who last played a league game while on loan at Anorthosis Famagusta against Pafos FC on October 5, 2019, had been an unused substitute in APOEL Nicosia’s last three league games.

The news comes as a huge relief for Gernot Rohr, who is expected to announce his squad for next month’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations double-header against Sierra Leone this week.

Rohr has also been boosted by the return of Daniel Akpeyi, who was in goal for Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday as they defeated Chippa United 1-0 in a Premier Soccer League clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday.

Akpeyi was cleared to play after missing the end of last season due to ill-health, after also obtaining a new South African work permit.

The 33-year-old is expected to keep his place when Kaizer Chiefs host TS Galaxy in their next league match.

It remains to be seen if Franco-German Rohr will include the duo in his squad for the games against Sierra Leone.
