The Nigerian Postal Service and the Economic and Financial Commission have resolved to renew their collaboration towards interception of scam mails and prevention of other financial crimes in the country.

This was made known during the week after a meeting between the Postmaster General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Dr. Ismail Adewusi and the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. AbdulRasheed Bawa.

Adewusi reiterated the desire of NIPOST to strengthen ties with the EFCC for the mutual benefit of the agencies.

He had paid a courtesy visit to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja where he also said NIPOST had recovered in recent times, fake credit cards and counterfeit currencies which were handed over to the EFCC.

He said, “We have recovered many financial instruments, including fake Credit Cards and counterfeit currencies, which were impounded and returned to the EFCC.”

The NIPOST boss disclosed that his agency recently perfected Address Verification, which he said would help security agencies in checking addresses of suspects and assist in preventing other crimes.

Adewusi further sought the intervention of the EFCC boss in tracking and reporting on the status of cases of theft by officials of the agency which were reported to the Commission.

While saying that NIPOST has been confronted with some changes which affected its operations, Adewusi however acknowledged that the changes have also created new opportunities.

In his response, the EFCC Executive Chairman, AbdulRasheed Bawa, commended the innovations by the NIPOST in the verification of addresses, saying that the Commission would key into the programme to verify addresses of suspects and even staff members.

He assured that the Commission would continue to patronize NIPOST.

“It is our desire to patronize government organizations and we are glad that you are here to strengthen our relationship which has been around for years; we will have to work on some strategic ways to sustain the benefit of our collaboration to enable us achieve our mandate with ease.”

Bawa noted that the NIPOST has over the years, worked closely with the EFCC.

While expressing appreciation for the courtesy call, the EFCC Chairman recalled the history of collaboration between the EFCC and NIPOST, saying as a young officer in Lagos, the Commission, NIPOST and the US Postal Inspection Service usually carried out inspections to detect several scam mails and the impounding of counterfeit financial instruments.

He said the two agencies must renew their energy towards such collaborations to intercept scam mails and other counterfeit financial instruments.

He told the Postmaster General, “Look at this for us, so that we can reap the benefit of your International Mail Processing Centre.”
