Nigeria international, Victor Osimhen had a night to forget as he got a straight red card in Napoli’s 2-0 victory over newcomers Venezia in the 2021/22 Serie A opener on Sunday.

Osimhen was given his marching orders in the 23rd minute after he was adjudged to have punched Venezia defender Daan Heymans.

Heymans was marking Osimhen during a Napoli corner kick in Venezia’s box when the Nigerian shoved him away.

The referee pulled the red card from his pocket, sending the Nigerian off — his second time in a Napoli shirt.

Osimhen had scored eight preseason goals and was poised to start the season on a high before being shown his marching orders.

Despite being one man down, Napoli were too powerful for their opponents, winning 2-0.

Lorenzo Insigne squandered Napoli’s chance to go ahead, playing his penalty wide in the 57th minute after the referee had adjudged Mattia Caldara to have handled the ball in the box.

He, however, made amends four minutes later, sending Venezia goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa the wrong way from thee penalty spot after Pietro Ceccaroni was also adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Napoli doubled their lead in the 73rd minute with Eljif Elmas finding the back of the net.
