Chief MKO Abiola...the symbol of 'June 12'...

There is no doubt that the unfortunate annulment of the most historic and credible June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Social Democratic Party (SDP) standard bearer, the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola will continue to be an issue on the Nigerian political landscape and beyond.

Already, the major ‘perpetrators’ are desperately reaching for restitution in one way or the other.

The most symbolic is the recent media attention being coveted by former military dictator, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

In his quest to justify ‘the political murder’ he committed, he has put to task, his spinners in the traditional and on the social media to weave and weave excuses for him.

Unfortunately, the more IBB and his people keep the issue of June 12 election annulment on the public space, the more they convince their audiences that they deserve to face ‘public opprobrium’!

History has continued to make the issue of the devilish annulment fresh on the minds of Nigerians for a major reason – and this has to do with the country’s leaders that have been ignoring the lessons learnt from the sad development.

Today in Nigeria, different nationalities are calling for the total restructuring of the polity.

The obstinate and stubborn decision not to consider this agitation has led to the request by the Yoruba for their own country. This is a dangerous dimension because this group is believed to be the most sophisticated in Nigeria.

There is need for those in positions of authority especially at the Federal Government level, to begin to reconsider some of these requests. A country that is being governed without respect for fairness and justice will continue to live on ‘borrowed times’.

A stitch in time saves more than nine.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
