- Don Offers Advice At Event, Identifies How To Use Social Media For Political Participation, National Integration’
A University Don, Professor Azeez Olaniyan, has charged Nigerians to utilize the benefits of the social media space for collaboration, political participation, empowerment and national integration.
Professor Azeez stated this during a lecture titled ’21st Century People And Social Media Effect On Governance’ at Ado Ekiti during the first year anniversary of Matured Minds, a social club in the state.
He stated that information dissemination in the 21st century has witnessed heavy social media activities and increased access to news without any censorship.
According to the University Don, “The advent of the Social media has helped to make the dissemination of information to be timely and inexpensive in terms of publishing information”.
He, however, admitted that good governance entails openness, acceptability, regard to human rights and rule of law among others while urging that people should be allowed to air their opinions logically on the socio-political state of the nation especially in a democratic environment.
Speaking, the Chief Administrator of the Matured Minds WhatsApp Group, Honourable Odunayo Ehinafe stated, “Matured Minds is a non-governmental, non-profitable social political group with membership which cuts across the state and beyond and also across the different political parties in the state”.
Ehinafe revealed further that the selected members of the group had earlier embarked on humanitarian visits to orphanage homes and to some selected less privileged citizens in Ado Ekiti to support them with cash donations and provided relief materials to victims of natural disasters in the state.
The highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards to distinguished members including a chieftain of the People Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Honourable Bunmi Adeyanju who was honoured with Award of Excellence for his Humanitarian and philanthropist acts to his community.
Reacting, Honourable Bunmi Adeyanju thanked the organizers of the event and promised not to relent in his efforts in helping the people irrespective of their political and religious affiliations. He further urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State to unite in order to come out victorious during the next year’s gubernatorial election in the state.
Other awardees included Senator Biodun Olujinmi, the Senator representing the Ekiti South Senatorial District as matron; Honourable Biodun Oyebanji, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) as patron; Honourable Yemi Adaramodu, member representing Ekiti South Federal Constituency 1 as the Most Sound Grassroots Politician in Ekiti state among others.
