Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed an amendment to the State Electoral law.

The amendment, tagged Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (third amendment) Bill, 2021 was sponsored by a member of the House, Hon. Bode Adeoye, representing Ekiti West Constituency II.

The Assembly, at the plenary presided by a Speaker Pro – Tempore, Hon Gboyega Aribisogan passed the bill after an extensive debate on the need for the amendment.

The sponsor of the bill, Hon Bode Adeoye remarked that the bill was a fallout of the recent development as regards to creation of Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) in Ekiti State.

The amendment bill aimed to provide adequate legal framework and to empower the State Independent Electoral Commission to operate smoothly and in tandem with current realities.

Leading the plenary, the Speaker Pro – Tempore, Hon. Gboyega Aribisogan, who was earlier nominated by Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye in line with rule 27 of the house standing order and seconded by Hon. Yemisi Ayokunle in the absence of the Speaker and his deputy, said the bill was an amendment to the existing law to make the Commission performed effectively on its mandate.

In their separate remarks, the Deputy Leader, Hon. Tajudeen Akingbolu, Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, Hon. Raphael Ajibade, described the bill as coming at the appropriate and would further enhance commitment on the side of the commission.

The lawmakers also passed a bill for a law to establish the Ekiti State Drugs and Health Supplies Management Agency and Other Matters Connected Therewith, following the submission of a report read by the Chairman, Committee on Health, Human Services and HIV/AIDS, Hon. Adeteju Okuyiga.

The bill seeked to establish an agency to ensure regular availability of quality drugs and health supplies at affordable costs to all health facilities in Ekiti State.

The report was committed to the Committee of the whole house and was passed, and read by the Clerk of the House, Mr. Tola Esan for the third reading.
