Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has condemned the unwarranted and unprovoked attack on the Zamfara state PDP Congress by thugs, describing it as a bad omen for Nigeria’s democracy.

This was released in a statement to PMParrot by the media office of the former Vice President on Friday.

He said, “There was no justification for the violent attack on the members of the opposition by armed thugs, criminal activities should not be tolerated by either the leaders of the ruling party or the opposition. Such open lawlessness by suspected supporters of the ruling party is an invitation to anarchy which will create conditions that make free and fair elections in the country a difficult task”.

The former Vice President further urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba to take immediate action to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the violent attack on the Zamfara state PDP members.

Atiku, however, urged the Nigeria Police Force to be politically neutral in order not to create false impression for members of the public that members of the ruling party are above the law.

He further stated that the refusal to arrest and prosecute those involved will encourage future impunity, adding that no group of people should feel unprotected from thuggery because of their political affiliation.
