How Renewed Cult Clashes Claimed Two Lives In Lagos

Two persons were on Sunday killed and many injured after suspected cultists resumed hostilities at the Ijanikin area of Lagos.

It was learnt one of the victims was trailed from Federal Second Gate to Adio Bus Stop where he was killed and the other hacked around Ile-Oba.

A witness claimed that those who killed the victim at Adio were teenagers, adding that sporadic shootings were heard on Monday morning.

“There was an exchange of words between them. It appeared that the deceased was begging for his life. One of them just pulled out a locally made pistol from a bag and shot the deceased at close range. The police came to remove his corpse three hours later,” said the witness.

For the incident at Ile-Oba, a resident, Adeniran, said the deceased was suspected to belong to a rival cult group, adding that his killers left his body beside a house.

He said the police did not come out while the fight ensued despite both incidents happening not far from the division.

Lamenting the frequent cult war, a woman who refused to be named, said: “We hear gunshots almost every day. The gang also robbed people of their valuables and they ride to the area on motorcycles. They carry themselves two or three on a motorcycle. On hearing gunshots, traders hastily closed shops to avoid being trapped in the crossfire.”

Spokesman for the police command, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident but said only one death was recorded.

He said the deceased was beheaded by rival cult gang members who trailed him from an undisclosed place to where he was killed.

Hundeyin said one person was later arrested for his alleged involvement in the killing and that the case has since been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba.
