The Ekiti State House of Assembly Committee on Environment and Natural Resources has commended the efforts of Ekiti State Government at curtailing erosion and flood problems in Ikere-Ekiti.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Tunde Idowu gave the commendation during a tour of the ongoing channelization works to control erosions in Ikere-Ekiti as the rainy season approaches.

Hon. Idowu expressed the satisfaction with the level and quality of work done; noting that the perennial havoc inflicted on the communities by the Osun and Aiya rivers during rainy seasons was a thing of the past with the level of intervention.

He who explained that the House Committee visited all the channelization project sites as part of its oversight functions and interacted with the benefiting communities, expressed confidence that the work done will stand the test of time and would remain durable for many years.

The Committee also commended members of the NEWMAP State Project Monitoring Unit (SPMU) for exhibiting great commitment and professionalism to achieve the feats within a short period of time.

Earlier, the NEWMAP State Project Coordinator, Dr. Akinyemi Akinyugha highlighted the scope of the project to include over two kilometres Channelization works along the Bisi Aloba/Adun Ogbon axis, about six different points across the communities of Kajola-Afao-Oriebu and four kilometers channel upstream and downstream at Kajola in Ikere-Ekiti with culverts.

Akinyemi said that the projects were about 90 percent completed and would be delivered before the rain starts fully, noting that those who had abandoned their houses and sites because of flood and erosion have started returning to their homes following the NEWMAP intervention.

A resident in the area, Mr. Sunday Gbenga and Mr. Olowolafe Adeniyi expressed gratitude for the intervention, noting that the sleepless nights they hitherto had during rainy seasons was over.
