A non-governmental organization, Balm in Gilead Foundation, (BIGIF), has urged relevant stakeholders in the country to stop the spate of violence against women in politics.

The Director of the association, Tumininu Adedeji further stated that the organization has selected 80 local mobilizers and supervisors across the three senatorial districts and 16 local government areas of the state to conduct voter’s sensitization and raise public awareness on the dangers of violence against women participation in politics.

Adedeji stated that the organization is also collaborating with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and other relevant organizations to take action against perpetrators of the inhuman acts, revealing that the campaign was an initiative to increase high level of participation of women in politics.

She said, “Stop-VAWIP is a nationwide initiative supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) with funding support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

She, however, urged residents to report cases of abuse and victimization via the hotline as an effective medium for reporting incidents of violence and election-related issues.

Speaking further, the Public Relations Officer of NSCDC in Ekiti State, Tolu Afolabi, stated that there is a section of the law that protects the interest of women in politics, while urging governments at all levels to give room for the law to thrive in the country.
