The three weightlifting athletes from Oyo State that represented Nigeria at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United kingdom have won Gold, Silver and bronze medals respectively.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Sports Council, Ibadan dropped this hint in Ibadan at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to the Chairman, Folasade Rafiat Lawal gave Nigeria second medal at the Commonwealth Games. Beside winning the goldedal she also set new Commonwealth Games record of 206 kg in the women’s 59kg weightlifting events. She was the second Nigeria female lifter to smash the games record after Adijat olarinoye produced a strong lift in the second athlete in the women”s 55kg.
The second athlete, Taiwo Liadi bagged silver in the events. She added to Nigeria’s medal haul after a total lift of 216 kg in snatch and clean and jerk category while the third weightlifting athlete, Osijo Taiwo also won Bronze Medal with total of 225kg in 87 class.
The elated chairman of the Oyo State Sports Council, Honourable Gbenga Adewusi “Arole” commended the outstanding and excellent performance of the trio from the pacesetter state emphasizing that three athletes proved their worths in the previous national and international tournaments in the recent past.
While making his contribution, the General Manager of the Council, Mr Gboyega Makinde stated that the unquantifiable and unique feats of these prodigies could be attributed to the relentless efforts of the diligent and resourceful coaches and the sports officers of the Oyo State Sports Council who are not only determined but resolute in ensuring that their athletes emerge victorious in all competitions.
The Chairman also eulogized the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde for his unique fatherly role in overhauling and revitalizing the sports and sporting activities adding that the laudable achievements of our athletes in the state is traceable to the laudable initiatives of the state helmsman towards rehabilitation of the sports facilities and provision of logistics and funding supports for the sporting activities.
He, however enjoined the upcoming athletes to intensify their efforts to achieve success in their various sporting careers.
The Commonwealh games will end on August 8th, 2022.
