The polity is already feeling the heat of the moment as politicians from all divides embark on programmes and activities that will see them emerging victorious during next year’s general election.

Far ahead of others are the three presidential candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) as represented by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Dr Peter Obi respectively.

Political observers have constantly been harping on the fact that all these gladiators need to really work hard to convince Nigerians that they have what it takes to turn the country around.

In the opinion of observers, there really is no difference between the three and those presently running the country. (An assignment they have very badly carried out).

Specifically, the three front runners have all ‘been there’ at one time or the other directly or by association.

Tinubu, for instance, is the leader of the ruling APC that has failed to delivered what Nigerians have been yearning for. This, to many, is why he must answer so many questions to convince those who will vote for him.

As for Atiku, there are more questions for him because he was Vice President of the country in the first eight years during this dispensation under General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd). His principal and others have written severally to denigrate him as lacking integrity. The same thing goes for Peter Obi whose tenure as governor of Anambra State has been widely criticized.

Like elders will say, the past is the past, it is always good to look into the future with optimism.

This is why it is good for Nigerians to keep open minds. Yes. They are anxious that the results of the 2023 general election will define what will happen to Nigeria as a nation.

The onus is now on Obi, Tinubu, Atiku and others to ensure that they go about their electioneering campaigns diligently and with all sense of responsibility. Posterity is right there waiting to deliver its own verdict.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
