How Kayode Martins Emerged As New Oyo NLC Boss

Comrade Kayode Martins has been elected as the Chairman of the Oyo State council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Martins, who had been operating in the acting capacity following the retirement of the Chairman, Comrade Titilola Sodo, returned unopposed to steer the affairs of the Union for the next four years.

Also elected unopposed alongside the Chairman were Kayode Salami as Vice Chairman, Olubunmi Folorunsho as Treasurer, Ayobami Adeogun as Auditor 1, Olaide Idris as Auditor 2, Grace Adegoke as Ex-Officio 1 and Rachael Egbinlola Omobolanle as Ex-Officio 2.

The election was conducted during the Quadrennial Delegates Congress of Oyo State council of the NLC held at the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Hall, Onireke, Ibadan on Tuesday.

In his address, the National President, who was represented by Comrade Ismail Bello, expressed that the Conference is to review the activities of the Union for the last four years to be able to activate plans of action for the next four years.

He commended the efforts of workers in the state especially during the challenges of economic recession and covid-19 pandemic, particularly the workers who were in the frontline.

The NLC National President encouraged the Union to build a movement that will empower workers in fair sharing of the benefits of economic growth.

He added that the Union needs to create the culture of dialogue and consultation between the government and the workers and promote sustainable development goals.

Speaking on behalf of the past chairmen, Comrade Waheed Olojede said that the purpose of the Delegates Conference is to strengthen the effort of the Union to promote the welfare of workers in Oyo State.

He appealed to all contestants to develop the spirit of sportsmanship irrespective of the outcome of the election, rather than seeing it as a do or die affair.

In his solidarity message, Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Labour Matters, Comrade Titilola Sodo, commended all workers for maintaining cordial relationship with the present administration in the state.

He used the opportunity to remind the workers of what the government of Seyi Makinde has done to improve the welfare of the workers in the state.

Sodo called on them to reciprocate the good gesture of Governor Makinde with votes on Saturday, March 11.

Delivering his acceptance speech, the newly elected NLC Chairman, Kayode Martins, reiterated his commitment to harmonize all members and continue to champion interests that will enhance the welfare of workers in Oyo State.

He appealed to all members of the Union to work together as a team to prevent external forces from breaching the unity to inflict suffering on the workers.
