The Oyo State House of Assembly has been petitioned by the Association of Resident Doctors at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

The petition was signed by the President, Dr. D. O. Olaniyan and General Secretary, Dr. S. I. Adedokun and read at the floor of the House by the Clerk, Mrs. Oludara Awe, called on the intervention of the state House of Assembly.

In the petition, it was disclosed that the quality of care provided at the teaching hospital has been jeopardized due to the series of challenges facing the hospital.

The petitioners further listed grueling workload, stagnant salaries and a low hazard allowance, saying that these have led to many doctors and house officers leaving the system for greener pastures.

The President and Secretary of the association said that the situation in the hospital has worsened to the extent that only 70 resident doctors, 10 house officers are doing the work of 238 individuals.

They, therefore, called for urgent intervention from the state lawmakers to forestall interruption of healthcare services in the facility.

“Our members are exhausted and can no longer cope with an excruciating workload amidst poor pay. On the aspect of the remuneration, our members are yet to start benefiting from palliative allowance for house officers, Medical Residency Training Funds (MRTF), new hazard allowance, 25/35 percent adjusted CONMESS. These deficiencies have imposed significant pay differences between our centre and other tertiary health centres around. We request expedite intervention to forestall interruption of our services,” the petition reads.

The Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, in his resolution on the petition, called on the House Committee on Health to consider the petition and report back to the House in two weeks.
