As the world prepares for the expanded 48-team World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, some countries have been recognised for having the highest number of appearances in the tournament’s history.

Brazil stands alone as the only nation to have qualified for every edition since 1930.

FIFA highlighted the milestone on Tuesday, noting that 2026 will mark Brazil’s record-extending 23rd appearance.

Here is the top 10 ranking of nations by total World Cup participations as released by FIFA on Tuesday:

Brazil – 23 appearances

Undisputed kings of consistency, the five-time champions (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002) is the only team never to miss the World Cup.

Germany – 21 appearances

A powerhouse with four titles. Germany (including the West Germany era) has missed only a few early tournaments and remains one of the most successful national teams in history.

Argentina – 19 appearances

Three-time champions, including the 2022 triumph. Consistent qualifiers with a strong recent record under Lionel Messi’s influence heading into what could be his final tournament.

Italy – 18 appearances

Four-time winners (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006). The Azzurri have endured qualification struggles in recent cycles but boast one of the strongest historical pedigrees.

Mexico – 18 appearances

The most frequent CONCACAF participant. Hosts in 1970 and 1986, Mexico has reached the quarter-finals twice on home soil and is a regular presence at the global tournament.

England – 17 appearances

1970 champions and perennial European contenders. Known for passionate support and high expectations, with consistent qualification in recent decades.

France – 17 appearances

Two-time winners (1998, 2018) and runners-up in 2022. A modern footballing superpower with deep squads and strong recent performances.

Spain – 17 appearances

2010 champions and recent UEFA Nations League standouts. Spain brings tiki-taka style and a strong generation of talent.

Uruguay – 15 appearances

Two-time winners (1930, 1950) and South American giants. Often punch above their weight with a proud footballing tradition.

Belgium – 15 appearances

A rising force in recent tournaments, reaching the semi-finals in 2018.
